Describe how the respiratory system functions.
~ Air enters the body through the nose and mouth, where both warmth and moisture are added. The hairs in our nose filter the air of foreign particles. The air then passes through the pharynx and larynx to reach the trachea, or windpipe. The windpipe contains cilia and mucus, which help filter out pollen, dust, and bacteria.
Air is then carried into the lungs through two tubes called bronchi. One tube runs into each lung. The bronchi branch out into smaller bronchioles, which have numerous sacs at the edge of each bronchiole called alveoli. There are many capillaries around the alveoli. Oxygen from the alveoli goes into the capillaries. Carbon dioxide waste goes in the opposite direction, from the capillaries to the alveoli.
Why do our bodies need oxygen?
~ Our bodies need oxygen to break down nutrients that we've ingested, and to release energy for our cells.
Why does the trachea, or windpipe, need to be kept open and clear?
~ The trachea, or windpipe, must be kept open and clear in order for the respiratory system to do its job of supplying the body with oxygen and removing carbon-dioxide waste. Since air enters the body through the mouth and nose and then enters the trachea, or windpipe, the trachea must be kept clear in order for the respiratory system to function properly.
