Everything You'll Have Covered

What are the main purposes of the female reproductive system?

~ The main purposes of the female reproductive system are to produce eggs for reproduction, prepare an appropriate environment for a fertilized egg, and maintain this environment to nurture a fetus until birth.

What is the purpose of the ovaries?

~ The ovaries develop and maintain the egg cells. They also secrete the female hormones estrogen and progesterone.

Describe the female reproductive process.

~ About every four weeks, an egg cell leaves an ovary and travels through one of the twin fallopian tubes with the help of cilia located along the edges of the tubes. The egg cell then moves through the fallopian tube because of contractions of the tube's muscles. When it reaches the uterus, the fertilized egg develops into a fetus. It remains there for approximately nine months while the fetus grows into a baby ready for birth.

What is the cervix?

~ The cervix is the narrow, lower portion of the uterus that meets the vagina.

What role does the vagina play in the process of childbirth?

~ The vagina is the birth canal. It is a tubular tract that leads from the uterus to the body's exterior.
