~ Molecules are relatively large, and in order for our cells to receive the energy they need, the molecules must first be broken down into monomers which are simple organic molecules.

Describe how protein molecules are broken down. What is the formal name given to a breakdown process involving water?

~ Protein molecules are broken down into individual amino acids, which are monomers. To accomplish this, the peptide bonds that bind amino acids to each other are broken down with the help of water molecules. The hydrogen ion in the water combines with the amino acids' amine group, while the hydroxyl ion in the water combines with the amino acids' carboxyl group. The formal name given to a breakdown process involving water is hydrolysis.

Describe how carbohydrates are broken down during digestion. Does hydrolysis occur? Why or why not?

~ Carbohydrates are digested when the glycoside bonds between simple sugars, the monomers, break apart. The hydrogen and hydroxyl ions from water bind to the released ends. Hydrolysis occurs because the breakdown process involves water.

Describe how fats are broken down during digestion. Does hydrolysis occur? Why or why not?

~ During the digestion of fats, each fat molecule is broken apart into three fatty acids and one glycerol molecule. These are the monomers. The hydrogen ions from water bind to each fatty acid. The hydroxyl ions from water bind with the glycerol. Hydrolysis occurs because the breakdown process involves water.
