~ Our skin's acidic secretions, which are produced by our sebaceous and sweat glands, work to keep harmful pathogens out of our bodies. Our digestive system helps to fight against dangerous invaders by killing any pathogens with the acids and enzymes found in the stomach.
How does the body use its temperature to fight off pathogens?
~ In the event that a pathogen reproduces and secrets a poisonous substance into our system, the body increases its number of white blood cells, which, in turn, causes a rise in temperature. By raising its temperature, the body can decrease the pathogen's rate of reproduction and possibly stop it from spreading any further.
What is immune response?
~ Immune response is a special defense mechanism in which the body produces specialized white blood cells. These special white blood cells have antibodies that allow them to destroy specific harmful antigens.
What is the difference between active and passive immunity?
~ The difference between active and passive immunity is the way in which each develops. Active immunity against an illness is developed by getting the illness itself or receiving the antigen via an injection. Passive immunity is developed by transference between a mother and child through either the placenta in the womb or breast milk after birth.
